NEW EMPLOYEE TRAINING: FIRE PROTECTION & EMERGENCY SERVICES COURSES:

LABORATORY SAFETY COURSES: OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH & SAFETY COURSES:

INTRODUCTION
(Top)

The Department of Environmental Health and Safety offers training courses on a variety of safety topics. This describes courses currently being offered.
Many OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) regulations have training requirements.
  • The Hazard Communication Standard mandates that employees who may be exposed to chemicals or chemical products as part of their work receive training on the safe handling of chemicals. Therefore, workers in the trade shops and machine shops, custodians, and anyone who works with chemical products must attend a "Hazard Communication" training program. All new employees who work with chemicals should have the training as soon as possible.
  • The OSHA Laboratory Standard requires that all laboratory employees who may be exposed to chemicals receive training. All new laboratory workers, as well as anyone who has not yet attended, should register for the "Laboratory Safety" program.
  • Laboratory workers who plan to use radioactive materials are required to attend a Radiation Safety course "Radiation Safety for Radioactive Materials Users".
  • Employees who may be exposed to human blood or other potentially infectious materials are required by the OSHA Bloodborne Pathogens Standard to receive training on this standard.
  • Employees who may be exposed to specific hazards, including lead, asbestos, formaldehyde, high noise levels, or who may work in confined spaces, or who conduct maintenance or servicing on machinery, or who are expected to use portable fire extinguishers are also required to attend specific training courses.
Many of these courses are presented at the at 395 Pine Tree Rd., EHOB Room 140.  There is limited Visitor Parking available.  Directions for the EHOB building.  Some courses can also be scheduled at your on-campus location for your convenience.

Scaffolding - Every year thousands of injuries occur on scaffolding across the country, despite numerous safety regulations aimed to prevent such incidents. There are a number of different scaffold types, having different rules and regulations surrounding their assembly, fall prevention requirements, and inspection procedures. EH&S details many of these requirements in our Fall Prevention Program, and provides safety training and consultation services to Cornell employees who work on scaffolding.

Machine Shop Safety - The Cornell University campus is home to numerous machine shops, ranging from small building maintenance shops, to student education and research shops, to our large Facilities fabrication shops.  EH&S can provide machine shop users with education on machine guarding techniques, the use of hand and power tools, basic chemical safety, personal protective equipment, and fall prevention.
