“Hot Work” is defined as any temporary operation involving open flames or producing heat and/or sparks. This includes, but is not limited to: brazing, cutting, grinding, soldering, torch-applied roofing, and welding. Welding, cutting, grinding, and other hot work are potentially dangerous activities that require the skills of a trained professional and a great deal of attention to safety. These professionals follow guidelines for safe welding practices, fire prevention, and the utilization of personal protective equipment. OSHA also has strict requirements for the use and storage of compressed gas cylinders necessary for some hot work.
In addition to understanding the hazards of welding and cutting, the City of Ithaca requires hot work permits to be completed and approved before such work can proceed. Cornell employees may obtain hot work permits through the Department of Environmental Health and Safety. Contractors are required to obtain hot work permits from the Ithaca Fire Department, located at 310 West Green Street. Please ensure that you follow Federal, State, and local regulations while performing hot work on campus.
